Physical Education

Intent

The experience of Physical Education in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development, and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills.

We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. These soft skills are important for children moving forward into later life, in education and employment. Research shows a gap in this skill set specific to our locality and region. We do this through fully adhering to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Develop life-long habits enabling physical fitness and healthy minds
  • Promote behaviours to help children lead healthy, active lives

Implement

New Invention Junior School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion activities, invasion games, net & wall games, strike & field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met, and where possible linked to other areas of the curriculum to strengthen learning and foster a whole school approach.

We are constantly mindful of National Initiatives surrounding obesity, mental health and swimming. We adapt and shape the curriculum and delivery where

necessary and appropriate to meet needs and requirements, while ensuring the children are centric to any changes.

Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. We offer Morning Sports Clubs, Lunch time Sports and Team games are available each day with a trained lunchtime team. In addition, we also offer a varied range of after school clubs, which differ each half term.

We continue to utilise the ‘Daily Mile’ during and outside curriculum lessons. This has been a proven and engaging method to encourage children to maintain their activity outside PE lessons. We feel this endeavours to meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

We have employed a PE specific member of the team to ensure consistent and high quality delivery of the PE curriculum. This allows the children to have continuity and gain confidence due to consistency in the lesson with the teacher. This member of staff also provides training to the wider teaching force and lunchtime team to ensure coverage and the building of knowledge.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun.

From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports.

We equip our children with the necessary skills and also a love for sport, which can give them opportunities for a healthy lifestyle, instil them with good values and develop meaningful relationships through life.
